What is a Temazcal/Inipi /Sweat Lodge
I personally learned to do a Sweat Lodge from the father of my child, who was taught by his native American teacher. This has helped in the European environment as it can support group ritual with ease. You can learn more about this different types of sweat lodge or Temazcal from different sources online and books. In my tradition we use ISIFUTHO which is basically the same method of healing, it is usually used for individual or solo cleansing with natural herbs. The herbs are for cleansing different illnesses, be that of the spirit, mind or physical.
Who are ANCESTORS and why is it important to recognise where we come from.
Ancestors are the members of our direct family system that we come from. Your DNA. We carry our ancestors in our DNA in OUR stories. WE have ancestors of the land – WE carry the history of our land, the group karma of our community and nation. Ancestors can also act as our guides in this life.
It is important to know where you come from to know where you are going. SANKOFA. In ritual this is a very important part of healing. In the west it is called FAMILY CONSTELLATION.
Who are the ANCESTORS of the future?
We are the ancestors of the future, our children and the next generations. How we walk on this earth NOW is directly affecting the story of the future.
What is a RITUAL or CEREMONY
A ritual is something we do often in order to connect with our higher self or achieve a specific goal. It is a space of silence, deep communication and gratitude. Ceremony is when we gather with others, mostly in a circle or intentional space around nature elements (water, forest or fire) to remember who we are, where we come from and that we are never alone.

Preparing for a Temazcal/Inipi/Sweat Lodge takes a lot of energy physically and mentally. The fire is a powerful force of energy, which is used to heat up the stones (grand mothers or grand fathers) that will be used during the ceremony. The stones have to be collected with outmost respect and care as not all type of stones can be used, some stones explode when introduced to the fire. It usually takes me about 7 to 8 hours, to prepare and do the actual ceremony. I have deep respect for this space as I always feel blessed by the process and those that show up – All the ceremonies are different, with different messages and learnings – this always leaves me at a wonder of the mysteries of the cosmos, amaZULU. ZULU means COSMOS.
ISIFUTHO, this is almost like the AYURVEDA system of cleansing, It includes steaming with natural herbs for different illnesses, and imbalances. It could be spiritual, physical, psychological imbalances. The cleansing also includes other methods very similar to the AYURVEDA system, like holistic diagnosing and many more. The African way of healing and cleansing is very ancient and very similar to all other indigenous cultures systems. Because of political reasons, the history of Africa (especially with the church), the diaspora, and hollywood movies, African rituals and Indigenous ceremonies appear to be complex and get stigmatised with a negative twist attached to it. The above has created a lot of misunderstandings, fear and miseducation not only about African spirituality but Africa as a whole. In nowadays some South African Shamans mix the old ways of ceremony with Christianity. I myself was very influenced by Christianity and Buddhism there fore it is a strong part of my making. The African way is not about charms, and bringing lost lovers, this is a very small insignificant part which seems to be good for business since the west had interfered with the old ways and socio-economics of the land.
